Plant profiles

Anubias · easy · low to moderate light

Attach the rhizome to rock or wood rather than burying it. Anubias is slow-growing, durable, and useful in shaded midground or hardscape positions.

Java fern · easy · low to moderate light

Keep the rhizome above the substrate and use it for texture on wood or stone. New plantlets often form on mature leaves.

Cryptocoryne · easy to moderate · low to moderate light

A rooted rosette plant that rewards patience. It may melt after planting or moving, then regrow once it adapts.

Bucephalandra · easy to moderate · low to moderate light

A slow-growing rhizome plant with detailed leaves and rich color. Secure it to hardscape and keep the rhizome exposed.

Java moss · easy · low to moderate light

Useful for shrimp tanks, driftwood, and natural texture. Trim regularly so it does not shade itself or collect debris.

Stem plants · moderate to advanced

Fast-growing stems add height and color but usually need more consistent light, nutrients, and trimming. Plant individual stems with room between them.

Match the plant to the system you will actually maintain. A forgiving low-tech plant in a stable aquarium usually beats a demanding plant in an overbuilt setup.
